What makes a community? Every community is unique, but as educators, we know that building relationships within our community is essential. Our Grade 8 students are true leaders in the community, both within the school and beyond. They actively participate in and organize initiatives that support others, including coordinating fundraisers to support local charities, and leading community service projects that make a tangible difference. Whether it’s raising funds for the less fortunate, supporting environmental initiatives, or contributing to local causes, our Grade 8s are always at the forefront of efforts to give back and make a positive impact.

Our Grade 8 students are also change-makers, driving initiatives that aim to make the school a more inclusive, supportive, and positive space for everyone. Through their leadership in anti-bullying campaigns and mental health awareness, they encourage kindness, empathy, and respect among their peers. Whether it’s creating posters for anti-bullying week or organizing events that promote kindness, the Grade 8s lead by example, inspiring other students to take action and make a difference in their own way.

The Grade 8 students at St. Angela Catholic Elementary School exemplify the values of leadership, service, and community engagement. Inclusivity and Recognition of Indigenous Culture

At our school, we are committed to recognizing the profound significance of Indigenous culture and history in shaping our shared world. This commitment is expressed through actions that foster understanding, respect, and reconciliation. One of the foundational ways we do this is through land acknowledgements, where we recognize the Indigenous lands upon which our school sits and honor the Creator. This daily practice not only reminds us of our connection to the land but also deepens our understanding of the history that has shaped the communities we are part of today.

In our efforts to educate students on the historical and ongoing impacts of colonialism, we incorporate virtual tours of residential schools. These tours offer a powerful and often difficult look at the traumatic legacy of residential schools and their long-lasting impact on Indigenous communities. By learning about this painful chapter in history, students are given the opportunity to reflect on the importance of healing and reconciliation and to understand the role they can play in fostering respect and empathy.

Each year, we dedicate an entire Indigenous Remembrance Week to honoring the voices of those whose lives were lost due to the residential school system and other colonial policies. During this week, we provide students with opportunities to listen to survivors’ stories, explore their cultural heritage, and engage in conversations about the importance of recognizing past injustices. Through activities, discussions, and community events, we ensure that these voices are heard and that the stories of resilience, survival, and healing are shared with our students.

Family Nights and Curriculum Nights: Building Strong Connections

We believe that learning extends beyond the classroom, and one of the best ways to support our students is by fostering strong connections between home and school. That’s why we regularly host Family Nights and Curriculum Nights, where families, educators, and students can come together to collaborate, share ideas, and connect. These events offer a unique opportunity for families to engage with teachers and staff, learn more about what their children are studying, and share their thoughts and insights about their child’s education.

Family Nights are a fun, informal way for families to come together, enjoy activities, and build relationships with one another. From game nights to movie nights, these events offer a chance for families to socialize and strengthen the sense of community within our school.

Curriculum Nights, on the other hand, focus more on the academic side, where teachers present what students are learning and how parents can support their child’s educational growth. These nights foster open communication between families and educators, ensuring that everyone is on the same page and working together to provide the best learning experience possible.
