The Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession provide every teacher with a set of principles that describe what the profession is about. These standards outline the knowledge, skills, and values recognized within the profession. These standards also guide, inspire, and promote a shared vision of what a teacher is, should be, and their role in education.

Commitment to Students and Student Learning

A commitment to students and student learning means being equitable and respectful of their thoughts, narratives, and identity.

Professional Knowledge

Professional knowledge means applying what is read about in theory to a classroom setting. It is demonstrating an understanding of educational research and applying it to all aspects of teaching.

Professional Practice

Professional practice means applying knowledge and experience to improve student learning. This includes engaging in an ongoing inquiry, reflection, and conversations with other teachers.

Leadership in Learning Communities

Leadership means upholding ethical standards outlined by the OCT. It is also a recognition of shared responsibility in student academic success.

Ongoing Professional Learning

An ongoing professional commitment to improve one’s education within the scope of teaching. It means being able to remain a lifelong learner and apply this new knowledge in a classroom setting.
